On-Site Metalspray Protects CFB Boilers

Recently, the circulating fluidized bed boilers at a US-based independent power station were experiencing frequent shutdowns due to elevated temperature solid particle erosion. The combustors would form leaks when the bed ash abraded away the carbon steel boiler tubes, particularly in the area above the refractory line. The plant asked another thermal spray vendor to spray the boilers several times with off the shelf materials to halt the erosion; however, the coatings did not perform adequately.

IGS assessed the problem areas, identified the root cause of the plant’s issues, and developed proprietary materials and dual-phase HVAS and HVOF processes in order to address this unique environment. Since that time, tube leaks have declined sharply, and equipment availability has improved significantly.
